HIA is committed to finding and supporting the next generation of skilled tradespeople. HIA established the youthBUILD program to attract more students into a career in residential building. The program recognises that in order for young people to able to make informed decisions about their future career prospects they need sufficient knowledge and experience on which to base their decisions. HIA would like to acknowledge schools and students for their dedication and achievements, in preparation for career opportunities in the building and construction industry.
CRITERIA AND REQUIREMENTS
The project must have been performed within the period June 30th 2008 and now, or be continuing to the end of the 2009 school year. Schools must be able to present photographic evidence of the project coupled with progressive evidence, drawings, CAD designs and sketches of its processes and/or completion.
CLOSING DATE
Entries must be received by HIA by COB Friday 12 June 2009.
ENTRY FEES
Entry to these awards is Free of Charge, with multiple entries welcome.
AWARD PRESENTATIONS
Awards will be presented on the Friday 24th July 2009 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre as part of the HIA Construction Skills Queensland Careers Day and Skills Recognition Awards, with students, parents, industry professionals and media invited.

AWARD CATEGORIES
Indoor Project
Any ‘Indoor Project’ which has been performed for a not-for-profit organisation, your school, another school or retirement village etc. This project may involve the renovation of an existing facility incorporating construction of walls, doorways, joinery, cabinetry or furnishing, painting and decorating.

Outdoor Project
Any “Outdoor Project” which has been performed for a not-for-profit organisation, your school, another school or retirement village etc. This project may involve any exercise encompassing hard landscaping, paving, concreting, bricklaying, play areas, retaining walls and seating with masonry as its base material.

Structural Project
Any ‘Structural Project’ which has been performed for a not-for-profit organisation, your school, another school or retirement village etc. This project may include work of a structural nature involving framing, roofing, supporting walls, decking, covered/sheltered seating and would incorporate mainly timber products.

Student CAD Design
Any ‘Student Design’ project which has completed the concept component (drawings, sketches) towards satisfying the Senior Graphics syllabus under any of the contextual areas. These designs could incorporate activities including a dog house, renovated kitchen, beach house, hard landscaping or structural renovation etc. The submission must include a series of sketches/drawings which reveal the developmental stages of the concept and would conclude with a series of CAD presentation drawings in paper based folio format.

Student Initiative Award
Recognition of specific accomplishment and/or demonstrated reliability, dependability or responsibility in a school project, industry involvement, further studies or individual achievements. The nominating teacher will submit a character report containing reasons for the nomination. This submission must include a photo of the student (in electronic format) and be no more than 250 words in its entirety.
