1. Skilled Construction Workers
This occupational area offers one pathway into the industry and covers a large variety of work options, initially as a builder’s labourer or trades’ assistant. Skill training is immediate on the job and progressive. The work is diverse and usually outdoors. Opportunities exist to be trained in a range of occupations some of which include:

Backhoe/Excavator Operator, Scraper/Grader Operator , Pipe Layer, Concrete Worker, Rigger, Labourer, Scaffolder, Crane Operator, Dogger, Steel Fixer, Trades Assistant.
2. Skilled Tradespeople
Skilled tradespeople are those who have completed an apprenticeship. A skilled tradesperson is fully competent in a set of skills relating to their particular trade. Examples include:
- Carpenter, brick layer, tiler, plumber, electrician, cabinetmaker, plasterer etc.
3. Building Technicians
Building Technician positions cover a varied range of activities for people who want a career offering a technical challenge and a combination of mainly office work with some outdoor onsite visits.
People training for outdoor or “on-site” positions, such as Foreman or Building Inspectors, usually do a part-time course in their specialised field after they have completed an apprenticeship.
Jobs at this level encompass general activities involving skills in aspects of:
- pre-planning the on-site situation
- planning and scheduling a project
- supervising construction, and
- site management and administration.
4. Managers
Progress to management levels depends upon industry experience and level of education.Most of the future executives for major building organisations will be graduates of building-related bachelor degrees, graduate diplomas and master’s programs, making them professional builders, construction managers and quantity surveyors.
