The first episode of CSQ’s new video campaign is launched today, bringing together teams from Thompson Building Group, McNab and WorldSkills to compete in a series of construction challenges that can best be described as ‘Myth Busters meets The Block’.

The digital web series is helping to promote the building and construction industry as a career of first choice.

During the series the teams compete in four unconventional challenges which test their technical skills, teamwork and creativity.

The videos show the journey each team embarked on during the building process, beginning with Episode 1: Tradie Vs Tropical Storm. This challenge sees the group working to build a port-a-loo capable of standing strong in the face of a cyclone (160km/hr wind machine and a 400 litre/minute water gun).

McNab carpentry apprentice Steve Webster said the competition had brought the best out in the competitors.

“The Tradie Vs challenges were unlike anything we have attempted before but the teams were able to come up with some clever solutions to tricky problems.

“It shows just how adaptable the skills you learn in the construction industry are and the different ways you can apply them.

“Not all of our designs survived the testing, but we think people will enjoy watching some pretty spectacular footage,” he said.

CSQ CEO Brett Schimming said he hoped the competition would help to attract new entrants to the building and construction industry.

“The Tradie Vs competition shows the construction industry is not just about hammers and nails.

“It’s a dynamic, fast paced industry which suits those who enjoy problem solving and can think outside the box.

“If you are considering your career options, have a look at Tradie Vs to see a different side of construction,” he said.

Voting for the competition closes at 5pm on Friday 5 December. The competition winners will be announced later that same evening at the 2014 CSQ Excellence Awards in Brisbane.

The winning team will receive an engraved trophy along with kudos from their industry peers and bragging rights.

As the Tradie Vs campaign shows, the building and construction industry offers a fun, innovative and rewarding career – no day is the same, and you never quite know what you’ll turn your hand to!
