Construction Skills Queensland is a long-time supporter of programs and initiatives that encourage more women into the building and construction industry.
CSQ is proud to sponsor the Award for Achievement by a Tradesperson in the Queensland National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Awards.
This year, that award went to Shynie Hayden, a third-year apprentice for Hutchinson Builders currently working on site at Brisbane’s Sky Tower Project – the tallest residential tower ever to grace the city’s skies.
Since starting her apprenticeship in 2016, Shynie has learnt everything from how to use a hammer and a circular saw to now being responsible for checking the status and integrity of each floor in the Sky Tower.
CSQ caught up with Shynie to hear what winning the award meant to her:
CSQ: What was your reaction to hearing your name announced as winner of this award?
SH: It was a shock to receive this award. At first it was overwhelming to hear my name called, but when I did, I believed that all my hard work was worth it. It was an exhilarating moment in my life and encourages me to achieve more and be even more successful.
CSQ: Do you think these kinds of awards nights are important?
SH: Every woman I saw at the NAWIC awards night looked so happy to be there and I think it’s because it is a comfortable environment where all women in construction are noticed, rewarded and appreciated. It brings women together to network, get to know each other, and be reminded that they are not alone in this male-dominated area.
CSQ: Do you have any advice to other women considering entering the industry?
S: I would say, don’t be afraid of stepping into these kind of roles in construction. It is always challenging whatever career you step into, but always step forward and do what you want to do. Don’t let anyone get in your way.
It has been the best thing I have done and I would never turn back time to change my journey.
