The Sunshine Coast has been crowned as Queensland’s construction training capital, taking home three Awards at the 2016 Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Excellence Awards.
Lendlease Building’s Krystle Nowland was announced as the winner of the National Association of Women in Construction Award for Construction Female of the Year, while East Coast Apprenticeships James Thompson was named as the recipient of the Master Electricians Australia Award for Construction Trainee or Apprentice of the Year. In addition, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) project won the Evolution Training and Safety Award for Employer Commitment to Training Excellence for organisations with over $20 million turnover.
The three Award winners were presented with their Awards in front of an industry crowd at a gala event in Brisbane on Friday 25 November.
The Construction Female of the Year Award recognises the achievements of women in construction who inspire other women to pursue a career in the industry, the Construction Trainee or Apprentice of the Year Award aknowledges the achievements of a trainee or apprentice who has shown enthusiasm and outstanding initiative in their training and the Award for Employer Commitment to Training honours the achievements of an employer who is commited to excellence in training.
CSQ CEO Brett Schimming said Krystle, James and the SCU Hospital Project stood out from the competition in a very competitive field of entries.
“The judges noted Krystle’s depth of knowledge and experience which she is happy to share with others as they progress through their careers. Her work ethic is to be admired and she has great future leadership potential,” he said.
“James’ strong academic background has aided him throughout his construction apprenticeship, demonstrated by his rapid progression through his current apprenticeship.
“There is a very strong safety and training culture present at all levels of the SCU Hospital Project. The judges were very impressed by the drive and energy of the leadership team.”
Mr Schimming highlighted the outstanding ongoing success of the Awards.
“The CSQ Excellence Awards continue to grow in popularity every year. This year’s field of entrants come from all corners of the state and have a diverse range of backgrounds,” he said.
“Our nominees share a common commitment to training and a strong desire to reach their full potential.
“We are entering an exciting phase in the construction industry as new technologies begin to transform many traditional building methods. At CSQ, we are at the forefront – leading the industry to success and quality outcomes by building a skilled workforce for the future.
