Recent Queensland industrial manslaughter legislation has reinforced the importance of understanding risks when digging around underground assets.
A new one-day training course aims to boost awareness of these risks and measures to prevent injury and damage when excavating around utilities.
Construction Skills Queensland is partnering with Dial Before You Dig (Qld) to deliver the ‘Pre-Excavation Management Around Subsurface Utilities’ course, which is targeting 250 supervisors/managers across Queensland.
CSQ Chief Executive Officer Brett Schimming said there was an identified need for safer work practices around excavation on construction sites to reduce the risk of hitting underground assets.
“The standard practices for locating utilities is not well understood in the industry,” Mr Schimming said.
“Increased training will provide greater awareness and knowledge on how to bring improved policies and procedures into current work methods.
“This course demonstrates the priority which CSQ places on programs and training designed to improve the health of safety of Queensland’s construction workers,” he said.
Mr Schimming said the bill from damages to subsurface utilities provided another strong case for preventative training.
“In addition to the health and safety risks, there is also a significant economic argument for avoiding damage to subsurface utilities.
“For example, it has been reported that over 50,000 damages to the underground assets of one major asset owner costing $95.5 million occurred over a 5-year period from 2010-2015,” he said.
The new course has been developed for supervisors and managers who oversee the on-site excavation to assist them to ‘know what’s below’ and ensure that they have the tools to excavate safely.
The course is being offered in major centres throughout Queensland and will run until 14 March 2019.
