Working safely near live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical

This Competency Standard Unit covers compliance with working safely up to the defined “safe approach distance” near energised electrical apparatus (inc. electrical powerlines) for non-electrical workers. It includes work functions that may be performed, such as vegetation control, scaffolding, rigging, painting, and/or any other activity that requires working safely and complying with requirements and/or established procedures near live electrical apparatus by a non-electrical worker. Also included is the preparation of risk assessment control measures that encompass job safety assessment. It does not include any work that is or may be performed by other competent operatives within the defined “safe working zone”. The defined “safe working zone” is that so defined by relevant State or Territory regulatory agencies/bodies, local government legislation, Industry bi-partite body – Guidelines/Codes of Practices or other related requirements for Safe work and access near live Electrical and Mechanical Apparatus.

Participant Eligibility

An eligible participant for this program

MUST BE:

  1. an Australian or New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident or
  2. a participant who has the right to work and study in Australia on a VISA and has been employed in the Building and Construction Industry for a period of 6 months or more and is
  3. an eligible worker in Queensland or is
  4. an unemployed eligible worker who has been unemployed for a period not greater than 6 months, in Queensland.

MUST NOT BE:

  1. an employee of an Authority
  2. currently enrolled and participating in a Queensland secondary school program,
  3. a contracted trainer or assessor or existing worker of an RTO,
  4. funded by an Authority or such other source for delivery of the same training being undertaken as part of this program,
  5. funded for more than eight (8) short courses under this program (either in building specific and/or civil specific) in the same program period,
  6. funded for more than three (3) high risk work (HRW) units of competency (excluding Asbestos units of competency) in the same program period,
  7. a participant seeking a verification of competency.
