Lucas’ Career Change to Construction
After a busy week working in the bakery before Christmas, Lucas Barry had a realisation - that being an apprentice baker maybe wasn’t the right path for him. He decided to throw in the towel (and apron) then and there and began looking into what it would take to become a carpenter.

From baking bread to building homes; Why Lucas decided to switch to construction.
“After a year of full-time (baking), I realised I did not want to be there anymore. It was time to see what else was out there for me,” says Lucas.
This is where Lucas discovered CSQ’s Trade Ready Program, a pre-trade route designed to help test if the construction industry is right for you.
“I found out about the Trade Ready Program through Seek and Indeed and read up about it on HIA’s website.”

“It just seemed like a really good pathway and opportunity to get my foot in door of the construction industry.”
HIA is one of the many partners that deliver CSQ’s fully-funded Trade Ready Program.
After Lucas successfully completed the 5–6-week course, he was offered an apprenticeship.
Bob Tecer, Apprentice Field Officer at HIA, believes the Trade Ready Program offers valuable insight and pathways to employment.

“It’s a great way for individuals to see if construction is right for them and learn the skills, before fully committing to an apprenticeship,” says Bob.
“It also allows employers to assess the individual’s capabilities, work ethic and to see if we can get them in as an apprentice!”
He’s enjoyed a front row seat watching Lucas throughout the entire journey and couldn’t be prouder.
“Lucas has been awesome. I’ve seen him progress in leaps and bounds. Getting more confident and experienced.”
“He’s focused, driven, reliable and he’s loving what he’s doing. He’s kicking goals,
it’s a win-win.”
Lucas, now in the second year of his apprenticeship, is absolutely thriving. With a recent nomination for HIA’s Apprentice of the Year awards, he’s not looking back.
His advice to anyone else feeling stuck in the mundane and potentially looking for a construction career? Jump in!
“Jump straight in, but choose something you really want to do”, says Lucas.
“Whether you’re a plumber digging holes, a sparkie running cables or a carpenter cutting timber. Just work hard and give it a go.”
