A young real estate agent from Portugal has proven that the right training and supportive teachers can unlock a whole new life path and career.

Fernando moved halfway across the world to pursue new opportunities in 2007 with his wife. Leaving their families behind, they chose Australia for a ‘better lifestyle.’

Originally a real estate agent, Fernando says, “I knew I wanted to do something more.”

Following in his cabinetmaker father’s tradie footsteps, Fernando was inspired to become a plumber.

However, because of his poor English, he knew it was important to improve his language skills to unlock new opportunities. Fernando and his wife polished their English through home learning.

“I needed to be very pro-active to find someone to take me on as an apprentice. This took several months of looking but I am proud to say I completed my apprenticeship last year.”

After undertaking a few of the CSQ-funded Apprentice Advance Plus Short Courses, Fernando says ‘as a specialised maintenance plumber, the more knowledgeable you become, the better you can serve the public’.

“Doing these courses will be essential to boost my career.”

Fernando admits that some of the subjects were challenging, but with the help of his great tutor, it was ‘a piece of cake’ to overcome.

“Construction Skills Queensland subsidised the full fee of the course and it was very helpful. I could buy some new tools.”

Fernando takes this opportunity to provide a message to fellow tradies:

“Remember, the only thing that cannot be taken away from us is our knowledge.”

Great job Fernando, your story is inspiring!
