They say inspiration can strike in the strangest places… TradeStart participant, Wei Wei, interest in estimating sparked when she was investigating having the ceilings of her home heightened last year.

“They quoted us over $20,000 and I wanted to find out why it cost that much.”

Wei is now undertaking TradeStart work experience at Hutchies and has nothing but wonderful comments on the program and Hutchies!

“This program is awesome; I can’t think of anything I don’t like about it.”

CSQ’s TradeStart initiative is a pre-employment program designed to attract individuals interested in building and construction who are not currently in school or part of the industry.

The program provides a mix of classroom-based learning and 160 hours of work experience.

Completing her first year of uni at QUT studying a double major of QS and costing engineering and architecture, Wei says that the program aids her studies in many ways.

“The program has helped me learn the foundation knowledge and basics of construction,” she says.

Although Wei really loves the on-site aspect of her work experience she is also enjoying being at the Hutchies head office in Toowong.

“I am learning how to use the software: cost x, the team is so helpful and are happy to help new students that need it.”

Interested in how construction starts from the ground up and every little detail/ feature that goes into the building process, Wei’s passion has only grown during this program!

“I think that TradeStart helped me to make an informed choice about my career pathway in the construction industry.

“I have learnt things I didn’t even know existed!”

Wei’s ultimate career goal after completing her degree is to become a Quantity Surveyor and eventually a Project Manager.

Congratulations on completing your work experience with Hutchies and your dedication to the construction industry, Wei!
